The five basic human needs are a list of essential factors that together build the foundation of a society. The list consists of exactly what the name suggests: extremely “basic” items that are the right of every human being, which need to be present before any real development can take place.

Among them, “safety” is one such need; and there is a clear lack, as well as a lack of effort, of any kind of safety in Bangladesh. While safety from crime is something that has deteriorated to a point far beyond our control, we are focusing on other aspects of safety; what about the controllable safety measures within our reach that we can adopt in our everyday lives? The biggest challenge is the complete lack of awareness of safety in our society. At first we need to embrace the fact that safety is a human right, and we cannot deny ourselves or other citizens their safety. Our cities are so densely populated that an accident next door could harm us as well. For this reason, maintaining safety first is everyone's responsibility.

Safety at home

The practice of safety begins from the home, but does everyone really know of the dangers in the household? Breaking a few habits can reduce many risks. The first habit is how we deal with fire. Sometimes we literally pretend it does not exist; if you do a lot of cooking, you probably cannot count how many times you've left the fire burning at the stove. Since smoke alarms do not exist in Bangladeshi households, there is no way to know if something is wrong in your unattended kitchen until it's too late. Our beautiful saris and the elaborate long kameezes that are in vogue with the bell bottom sleeves and the chiffon scarves are the worst outfits to wear when you are cooking; they catch fire very easily. Another bad habit to break is hanging clothes in the kitchen to dry with the stove on when it's raining outside. You are just one light breeze away from a piece of clothing dropping on the open fire and causing a crisis.

A concept that is still alien to us is that of “child-proofing” the house. In many countries, when a child is born in a household, especially when she reaches her toddler years, parents install a lot of contraptions to ensure the safety of the toddler. For example, a childproof gate on top of the stairs so that she won't fall; or locks on cupboards and drawers that she could possibly reach, like those under kitchen counters. What do we do when there's a toddler in the household? We hire a maid and dump all the responsibility on her shoulders. Don't be passive about your child's safety; stay proactive and install safety measures in the house. And in case something does happen, do you know how to treat a burn? If you drop hot water or a cup of tea on your lap and your pants get stuck to your skin, what do you do? How is a first degree burn different from a third degree burn, and how do you immediately treat it? Ask these questions, because you never know when you might need to know the answer.

Workplace safety
Your workplace is where you spend most of your waking hours every day and unlike your home, your office, especially if you consider the building as a whole, might have a large group of people. The safe handling of electronics is the first priority at work. When you leave your office, turn off all the power switches on your computer. This also applies to the home as well. In a country with frequent power outage, we tend to forget that when it comes back on, there is a surge of power rushing through the wires that might fluctuate and burst, causing a fire if the fuse isn't working. Unattended, this kind of incident could have staggering effects, especially in offices because no one will be present to handle it after a certain time of the day.

There are extensive occupational health and safety standards manuals and even longer training programmes provided to staff in many countries. If your workplace is one where there is a lot of manual labour, you should be aware that there is a proper way to lift heavy objects without straining your back. There are also some stretches that can be done by employees who work at their computers all day. Research these basic standards and put up the diagrams that depict the simple postures in the tea corner at work; this simple gesture can significantly reduce a lot of irreversible back injuries. Observe your office building to see if fire exits are clearly marked, and most importantly, usable and not locked from the outside. Are there fire extinguishers on every floor, and do you know how to use them? Are there regular fire drills?

Safety is everyone's responsibility
Pointing fingers is easy, but ensuring safety for all can never start with just one person. You've got a role to play as much as anyone else. Is your family aware of all the basic safety issues in the household? Does your workplace have a fire safety strategy enforced? If you are a teacher, you need to start a special class in your school that teaches your students about safety and how to treat burns and injuries. If you play a management role at your office, it's time to do a random fire drill. If you're a concerned family member, you need to let the rest of your family, including the helping hands, know about all the things that could go wrong so they are extra careful.

And finally, if you believe yourself to be a concerned citizen, you will take some time out of your busy Facebook stalking schedule to look up all the issues mentioned above on the Internet. Let's stop making safety second, third, fourth, and sometimes even the last, thing on our mind.

'Better prepare than risk disaster'

Disaster Management and Relief minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali expressed satisfaction on preparations taken ahead of cyclone ‘Mahasen’ and said it had helped cut down risk of a disaster. Ali told a press briefing on Thursday his ministry had already allotted Tk 100 million and 5,000 metric tonnes of rice to aid the victims of the cyclone.

A total of 19 helicopters, four aircrafts and 22 Bangladesh Navy vessels had been kept ready to handle the aftermath of the cyclone for rescue and relief operations, he said. “Helicoptors and aircrafts were meant for inaccessible areas,” the Minister said. Police, paramilitary Border Guard Battalion (BGB), Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, government officials and volunteer organisations were all working, he said. Earlier, danger signal ‘7’ was hoisted in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar areas with warning signal ‘5’ in Mongla. Fifteen coastal areas had 3,296 cyclone shelters to house people from vulnerable areas along the coasts. Victims will be provided with relief through local administration after the storm, Ali said.

Cyclone ‘Mahasen’ weakened on impacting the Bangladesh coast on Thursday, as it breezed past the Meghna estuary to cross Noakhali and Sitakunda in Chittagong on Thursday afternoon. Bangladesh Meteorological Department Director Mohammad Shah Alam told bdnews24.com that the cyclone was expected to cross over to Myanmar in the next three to five hours. “We will consider lowering danger signal after the storm clears the coast,” he said. "It is weakening." From 6am-12noon, the storm sustained wind speed of 50 kilometres per hour, but later windspeeds fell to 25 kilometres per hour. “ While crossing Patuakhali, the storm lost much of its strength dissipated by gusty winds and rainfall.” He said the storm might pass away from Bangladesh by 9:00pm at night.

THEY were pulled by a deep sense of humanity to do some hand-holding with the men and women buried under the wreckage of the Savar building collapse. Many young men, students and others, local and from far away places of their own volition, converged on the wreckage site and worked wonders as good Samaritans. They strained their ears to sense any purring sign of life and focused their eyes on every nook and cranny of the rubble to respond to any faintly audible SOS call. They went with their bare hands to get to work that was fraught with daunting odds. Their grit, ingenuity and compassion drove them into improvising devices to get to the badly wounded or dead men and women and shoved them out into the open. As priority was given to the survivors, recovery of dead bodies was considered no less important for turning the corpses over to their relatives.

The important thing to realise is that the conditions were life-threatening both for the victims as well as those on rescue mission, although in varying degrees. It took a lot of brawn, brain, courage and presence of mind to work out split second solutions to get the living and dead out of the piles of rubble. Those who donated blood in large numbers deserve a word of thanks. They all are achieving a mission impossible shoulder to shoulder with the army, navy, air force, police, BGB and civil defense personnel on whom we depend for the major part of the undertaking. Their call to duty is hardly over, though.

The way different hospitals have been working relentlessly to succour the suffering giving them a life-saving healing touch has been quite laudable as well. Now, the real job begins of helping the injured to their feet and rehabilitating them as compensation is given to bereaved families.

Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus yesterday received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award of the United States, in recognition of his efforts toward combating global poverty. Yunus is only the 17th person in history to have won both the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, another of the highest US civilian awards. Yunus won the latter award in 2009.

The achievement places him in the company of Norman Borlaug, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Elie Wiesel, Aung San Suu Kyi and Mother Teresa — personalities who have received the two medals from the US as well as the Nobel Peace Prize. “Professor Yunus set out to do what may be the biggest thing of all, and that is liberating people to seek a better life. And not just any people, but men and women who had only known misery, who had been told they were no good,” House Speaker John Boehner said during the award ceremony in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington DC. “To do all this, he first had to teach himself how to run a bank from scratch. That was when he realised he had to do the exact opposite of what a bank normally does to make his idea work.  Then there was actually getting people to borrow the money, to see value in themselves, to spark their sense of wonder. He had to convince them that they too didn’t need rank or status to advance their place in life,” he said.

Yunus given rare honourHouse and Senate leaders presented Prof Yunus with the Congressional Gold Medal, which was announced in 2010. “It’s very emotional. It’s not only an endorsement, but an inspiration for everybody who has supported us — colleagues and friends, staff and borrowers of the Grameen Bank, all the people who participate in social business,” a jubilant Yunus told The New York Times ahead of Wednesday’s ceremony in Washington DC. “I’m grateful to the US Congress that it paid attention. Many people do good things that are never recognised. I’m very blessed that way,” he said, while dedicating the honour to the people of Bangladesh. Yunus is best known for developing the concept of microcredit and using that model of lending to promote economic and social opportunity. Through his Grameen Bank, Yunus pioneered the movement and helped hundreds of millions come out of poverty. Today, microfinance providers reach about 200 million clients globally.

In Bangladesh, the Grameen Bank, the first bank in the world owned by poor women, has 8.4 million borrowers — 96 percent of whom are women. Known as the Banker to the Poor, Yunus has set up many other enterprises that offer an array of products and services to the poor, to achieve his lone ambition of eradicating poverty from the world, or, as he likes to put it, “sending poverty to the museum”. In 2010, the US Senate unanimously approved a bill to award Yunus the medal, which represents Congress’ highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievement and contribution. Former recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal include George Washington, Sir Winston Churchill, Elie Wiesel, Pope John Paul II, Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King. In the next five years, Yunus wants to see at least 1 percent of the world economy made up of social business, his new passion.

“If we can make that 1 percent happen, I think the world will be completely different. People will see how exciting it is, and soon the level will rise from 1 to 5 percent and pave the way to 50 percent,” he told the newspaper. Social business is a non-dividend company dedicated to solving human problems. It allows the company to make profit, but it stays with the company. The owner will only get back the original investment, and nothing more, according to Prof Yunus. He is upbeat about the success of social business, as he was in the case of microcredit. “There’s a whole generation of young people coming up with social business ideas. Profit making doesn’t interest them as much as it interested people before, particularly the post-war [Liberation War of Bangladesh] generation. Their main question is: What am I going to do with my life? What is the purpose of my life?”

Yunus said once people like the idea of social money, they would start diverting their business money into social businesses. The microcredit pioneer said it was very much possible to eradicate poverty. “With the creative power we have today, this is a do-able proposition. We can create a world where poverty doesn’t exist. In order for the next generation to see poverty, we’ll have to create poverty museums. That’s where poverty belongs, not in human society.” “So let’s put this on the list of impossibilities that we want to make possible within the next 20 years. That’s the way change takes place,” he told the New York Times.

A small initiative sometimes can be of great help to many deprived people. With the setting up of a primary school at Char Parbatipur village under Sadar upazila of the district, children of the village now have the opportunity to receive elementary education. Over 1,000 people now live on the land that emerged from the Brahmaputra River in Jatrapur union in 2002. But their children have been deprived of education for want of a school. Funded by Caring and Sharing LSI Fu-Tien Foundation, a non governmental organisation (NGO) of Thailand, the school has been built on a 30 decimals of land on February 12 and formally inaugurated by lawmaker Md Zafar Ali on February 22.

Initially, 100 children have been enrolled at the school. Three of the four teachers, recruited for the school, will get Tk 6,000 per month while the other, religious teacher, will receive a monthly salary of Tk 2,500. Kurigram district information office will coordinate the activities of the school. The NGO will provide books, school bags, pencils and other materials for the students. Chaired by District Information Officer Md Nurunnabi Khandoker, the inaugural function was addressed, among others, by Lawmaker Md Zafar Ali, Sadar upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mostafizur Rahman, Kurigram Press Club President Shafi Khan, and Jatrapur Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Gafur. At least 500 people of Char Parbatipur village were present at the function held on the school premises.

UP Chairman Abdul Gafur said as there is no school in seven other char areas of the union, Char Parbatipur Primary School will help the children of the areas receive primary education. District Information Officer Md Nurunnabi Khandoker said a 24-metre-long tin-shade house of the school is being constructed and the NGO has given Tk 1.25 lakh for this poupose. It will also give the school Tk 500 per moth as maintenance cost, he added. Lawmaker Md Zafar Ali in his speech said one more primary school will be set up in another char village as soon as possible. A secondary school-cum-cyclone shelter will also be built in the union, he added.

This is sensational news that whereas tree plantation and social forestry are being encouraged by the government, some vested quarters are doing a brisk business of unauthorised felling of trees. It is revealed in a prominent Bangla daily report from its Gazipur correspondent that 60 trees had been sawn off at Pubail under a fictitious tender. It is understood that the trees were extremely valuable property of the state, the list including rain tree, korai, eucalyptus, mehgony and akashmony. Besides, 20-25 trees have been half-felled.
This constitutes a blatant violation of law and expropriation of public property through fraudulent means. The crime was committed by alluding to Roads & Highway Department's imaginary plan for widening roads on both sides. A local AL worker is said to have directed a weeklong tree felling activity drawing a reference to what transpires to be a fake work order. After having felled the trees, the timber was auctioned under the nose of local administration, and the booty was taken away allegedly by an AL man. In fact, there is suspected to be a racket involving some other people who make a bonanza of luxuriant trees.
This maybe just the tip of an iceberg. For, this has been going on for long and yet the local forest and other authorities seemed to have looked the other way. In fact, it is alleged that a local racket tried to sell some 265 trees valued at a few crore taka for a paltry sum of Tk 3,85,000. This is serious dereliction of duty on the part of the authority that had planted and grown the trees in the first place. Investigation and auditing should be conducted on the loss of trees. Then legal proceedings need to be drawn against the responsible persons and private parties.
The matter needs to be addressed seriously because what is at stake here is not merely public property but also ecology and environment in the areas concerned.
