SL rescues 127 Bangladeshis from sinking vessel
Sri Lanka Navy has rescued 127 Bangladeshi and 11 Myanmar nationals
from a sinking fishing vessel off the island’s eastern coast.
In
a statement on its website, the navy said it rescued 138 people whose
overcrowded wooden vessel began to sink in the seas 50 nautical miles
east of Oluwil on Saturday.
It said all were brought to
the Oluvil Fisheries Harbour and six of them -- four males and two
females -- were rushed to the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital for treatment
for acute dehydration.
The statement added that the group
that included 132 males, three females and three children, had been
stranded at sea for 10 days when the navy rescued them in a response to a
request made by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
